  • Land the bottom of the stringers on a concrete pad or footing, not bare soil, so they don’t settle or wick moisture.
  • Attach the stringers to the deck rim with galvanized hangers or a ledger, and use exterior-rated fasteners throughout.

Outdoor stair code

Deck stairs follow the same IRC limits as interior stairs — max 7¾″ riser, min 10″ tread, 6′8″ headroom — with two outdoor extras: a graspable handrail where there are four or more risers, and treads that shed water (a slight slope or gapped boards). Worked example — stairs off a 36″ deck

Say the deck surface sits 36″ above the finished pad. Divide by an ideal 7″ riser and round: 914 ÷ 178 ≈ 5, so you build 5 risers. Dividing the rise back by 5 gives an equal 7³⁄₁₆″ riser — comfortably under the 7¾″ max.

Five risers means 4 treads (the deck is the top step). With a pair of 2×6 boards making an 11″ run, the total run is 4 × 11 ≈ 3′‑8″ and the stringer diagonal is √(914² + 1116²) ≈ 4′‑9″ — so a 5 ft board cut yields each carriage. The pitch lands at 33.2°, dead in the comfort band, and at five risers the IRC requires a graspable handrail. A 36″ wide flight needs three stringers.

Common deck-stair mistakes

  • Landing the stringers on dirt. Bare soil heaves and rots the wood — the feet must bear on a frost-protected concrete pad or footing.
  • Measuring rise to the wrong point. Total rise is deck surface to the finished pad or grade, not to rough soil; an inch off here throws every riser out of equal.
  • Skipping the bottom landing pad. A door or gate opening onto the stairs, or a flight over the code rise limit, needs a landing — not just open ground.
  • Too few stringers. Outdoor treads flex and cup; keep carriages no more than about 16″ apart, so a 36″ stair takes three, not two.
  • Interior-grade fasteners and hangers. Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless hardware rated for the treated lumber, or the connections corrode within a season.
